Hitchcock Under the Stars in Santa Barbara

I usually believe "The best things in life are free"...and I love it when I come across a serendipitous example.

This summer on Friday nights, the City of Santa Barbara, in conjunction with UCSB Arts & Lectures, offers the community a series of free movies, shown on a huge screen in the gorgeous sunken gardens of the Santa Barbara Courthouse (breathtaking day or night). I had been working all day in the hot studio and luckily my friends got there early and staked out a place on the lawn, then came to pick me up and even had an extra sweater and jeans for me to wear. (The evenings dramatically cool off here).

Armed with snacks, blankets and lawn chairs, we headed to the venue. I'm a devoted fan of Alfred Hitchcock (and Edith Head... sigh.. and romance, suspense and blond hair...) and the film was Vertigo so this was perfect.  We nestled in under the stars, amongst the other locals with their cozy spreads. We relaxed and enjoyed a beautiful evening and a great film.

I'm going back this Friday for Rear Window. If you're in Santa Barbara, maybe I will see you there!

  • Thanks for sharing the itinerary!!! I’ve never been to Concerts in the Park, but I saw a pretty funny video of a guy dancing and it seems like there was some wine happening….. hmmmm…

    ― Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock wasn’t just one of the greatest directors of all time; he was also one of the film world’s most reliable founts of wit and wisdom. The Santa Barbara Hitchcock Movie Series at the Sunken Garden (an architectural gem) ranks at the top of the list — great fun for most ages !! And, unlike the Thursday nights Concerts in the Park, they have never made an announcement that wine is not permitted.
